Standards and Expectations

Year 6 is an exciting and important year for the children. As the oldest children in the school, they are expected to lead by example and demonstrate leadership skills by taking up various roles. These include our House Captains, Active Leaders, Librarians, School Councillors and Worship Leaders. 

The children in Owl class are expected to set a good example to the rest of the school by being well-behaved, punctual, organised, helpful and polite at all times. High standards of work are expected from them both in work completed at school and at home.

Term 1 What are we learning about this term?

Term 1 Homework

Children can choose some tasks to complete from the 'Homework Wheel'. These tasks will all link to learning in the classroom this term.  Children will be awarded Dojo points for completing tasks!  

Reading- Children will be asked to read daily at home and for this to be noted in their school reading diary.

Spellings- Children will be set weekly spellings- these will be uploaded EdShed.

Times Tables- Please continue to practise times tables. This could be done using platforms such as Times Table Rock Stars.

Reading

Part of a child’s development as a reader involves them selecting and discovering their own reading material. Children will bring home a book chosen from our school library that is within their AR level. They will need to bring their reading record book into school every day as this is where we write in their books and comments when reading.  They will participate in group reading sessions in school and will read 1:1 with an adult regularly.  You can assist with helping your child's reading process by listening to  them read from their reading book and discussing any difficult words or phrases.  There is nothing nicer than snuggling up to read a book together!

You can support your child with this by using our ‘KIRF’ documents for each term. The KIRF’s, (Key Instant Recall Facts), are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin much of the maths work in schools. They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing. It would be wonderful if you could support your child with learning their KIRFs.

Wider Opportunities

The Year 6 Enterprise Scheme, encourages children to come up with ways to fundraise for special events such as the Year 6 leaver's party and hoodies. It teaches children to be resourceful, work as a team and take ownership.

To encourage independence and responsibility, children have the opportunity to take on pupil leadership roles.
