Computing

“Everyone should know how to programme a computer because it teaches you how to think. “– Steve Jobs (Apple Inc)

At Charlton Primary School, we want every child to feel safe, respectful and ready to navigate an increasingly digital world. We recognise that technology is an important part of children’s lives, offering exciting opportunities to learn, communicate, create and explore. Alongside these opportunities come risks, and we are committed to giving our children the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make safe and responsible choices online.

Through our curriculum, pastoral support and everyday use of technology, we aim for the children at Charlton to understand the digital world around them, recognise potential risks, protect their personal information and know what to do if something online makes them feel worried or uncomfortable.

We encourage children to be safe by understanding online risks and making sensible choices; respectful by communicating kindly and responsibly with others; and ready by developing the digital knowledge, resilience and critical-thinking skills they need for life beyond primary school.

As a small school, we value strong relationships with children and families. We will work together to create a culture where children feel confident to ask questions, report concerns and seek help, ensuring that online safety is an integral part of keeping every child safe and preparing them for their future.

Online Safety Learning

The children at Charlton C of E Primary are taught about online safety throughout the year. This includes the use of devices of different devices.  Parents may receive information on class Dojo about how they can best support their child at home. The children take part in safer internet day each year.

Acceptable Use Agreements

At school, we ask all children, staff and volunteers to complete Acceptable Use Agreements. These are documents that outline how we expect members of our school community to behave online and cover things such as:

  • Letting a trusted adult know if something they don’t like has happened online, via phone or app – we want them to make us aware to support them to be safe.

  • Being respectful of IT equipment.

  • Blocking or reporting people who send nasty messages, not to open unknown links and attachments (preventing viruses, malware and adware from infecting school systems),

  • Behaving with respect in the same positive, friendly and responsible way online with their friends as they would on the playground.

  • Following our behaviour policy of be Ready, Respectful and Safe.

When we use technology, we:

 Be Safe

  • Tell a trusted adult if something online makes you feel worried, upset or uncomfortable.
  • Never share personal information, passwords or photos without permission.
  • Do not open links, files or attachments from people you do not know. They could harm our school computers.
  • Block and report anyone who sends you nasty, unkind or worrying messages.
  • Ask before you use the internet in school.

 Be Respectful

  • Treat people online with the same kindness, respect and friendliness that you would show them on the playground.
  • Use kind and appropriate words when messaging, commenting or playing online.
  • Look after school computers, tablets and other IT equipment and use them carefully.
  • Remember that what we do and say online can affect other people.

Be Ready

  • Follow our school rules when using technology.
  • Listen to instructions and use devices for the purpose you have been asked to use them for.
  • Be ready to learn, explore and make good choices in the digital world.
