Religious Education

At Charlton CE Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is an important part of our Christian vision and our commitment to helping every pupil flourish. Through RE, children develop their knowledge and understanding of Christianity and a range of other religions and world views, while having opportunities to reflect on the beliefs, values and questions that shape people's lives.

Pupils learn about a range of other faiths and world views, developing their understanding of the diverse society in which they live. We encourage children to ask thoughtful questions, consider different perspectives and respond with curiosity, respect and compassion.

As with our whole-school curriculum, RE is taught through an enquiry-based approach. Children are encouraged to ask questions, investigate ideas, explore evidence and different perspectives, and develop their own considered responses. Rather than simply learning facts, pupils are supported to make connections between what they learn, their own experiences and the wider world. This approach develops curiosity, critical thinking, reflection and a willingness to engage thoughtfully with questions that may not have simple answers.

RE contributes significantly to our pupils' personal and spiritual development. It provides opportunities for children to reflect on questions of meaning, purpose, identity, belonging, justice and responsibility, and to consider how beliefs can influence the way people live and make choices. In doing so, RE supports our Christian vision of enabling pupils to become confident, compassionate and responsible citizens who are ready, respectful and safe.

Our RE curriculum is broad, balanced, coherent and progressively structured. It develops both knowledge and skills, enabling pupils to revisit and deepen their understanding as they move through the school. Learning is informed by the Kent Agreed Syllabus, Understanding Christianity, and resources and guidance from the Diocese of Canterbury and other recognised RE providers.

Through RE, we want our pupils not only to know about religion and world views, but to develop the understanding, empathy and wisdom to engage thoughtfully with the beliefs and experiences of others. We seek to nurture children who are curious about the world, respectful of difference and courageous in considering the big questions that matter.
