Little Wandle

At Charlton, we use the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Systematic Synthetic Phonics programme (SSP) to teach phonics and early reading.

This is a fully comprehensive programme in which children start learning single letter sounds in the autumn term of Reception and build on this progressively throughout Reception and Year One.

Phonics is taught every day and children have the opportunity to apply their phonics skills in reading practice sessions 3 times a week, developing their fluency and comprehension skills.

We also use the Little Wandle Rapid Catch-up programme to support any pupil in Year 2 and above who is not fully fluent in reading or has not passed the Phonic Screening Check. Through the use of placement and fluency assessments, we are able to identify gaps in pupils' phonic knowledge and teach to these using the Rapid Catch-up resources.

The resources on this page will provide you with all of the information about the programme and will help you to support your child with saying their phonemes (sounds) and writing their graphemes (letters). There are also useful videos to enable you to see how your child is taught at school, to be able to confidently support their reading at home.

If you wish to purchase a set of Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics flashcards to support your child with their phonics and reading at home, please follow the link below

If you have any additional questions regarding the Little Wandle programme, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment with Miss Skelton, our Reading Leader.
