KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts)

We have introduced KIRFs as a whole-school program for raising standards in Maths.

KIRFs (Key Instant Recall Facts) are designed to support the development of the mental skills that underpin much of the maths work in schools. They are particularly useful when calculating, be it adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.

An important part of maths development has always been rote learning of certain numeracy facts.

For many years this has included practising times tables, which we will continue of course. Children from Year 1 onwards should use their TimesTable Rockstars access to learn their tables through play!   Please log in at  https://ttrockstars.com/

Additionally, each half term children are given Key Instant Recall Facts (KIRFs) to practise and learn at home as well as in school. It would be wonderful, if you could support your child with learning their KIRFs.

The sheets include practical ideas for parents / helpers to assist children in grasping the key instant recall facts relevant for each term.

The KIRFs will be practised at school and we hope that parents and children will use them to further support mathematical learning at home.

Your child's teacher may now and again send KIRFs from a previous year group to help fill any gaps in mathematical learning.
